Sharing Best Practices on Operational Responses to Combat Migrant Smuggling Workshop

Hanoi, 29th-30th Jan 2015

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Vietnam held a workshop this week in Hanoi to support operational responses to combat migrant smuggling in Vietnam.

The IOM Chief of Mission for Vietnam, Mr. David Knight, urged national and international partners to “further strengthen cooperation and information sharing to combat this unscrupulous trade that threatens the lives of desperate people”.

The workshop, which was organized with support from the Government of Canada, brought together law enforcement officials from Viet Nam, Canada, Thailand and Australia together with international specialists from IOM, INTERPOL and UNODC.

The workshop examined the effectiveness of awareness raising campaigns to prevent people smuggling and also looked at the latest developments in data collection, alerts and intelligence sharing and explored how new technology could be applied to combat people smuggling syndicates.
