The IOM Migration Health Assessment Programme (HAP), as part of the Migration Health Division (MHD), provides migration health assessments and related services as one of the longest-standing activities of the Organization. IOM carries out these activities through Migration Health Assessment Centres (MHACs) in 50 countries, mobile teams for processing in remote areas and with a large network of service providers and cooperating centres.
From 1987 to the present, IOM Viet Nam has been actively involved in facilitating health screenings and travel arrangements for migrants under various programs. Since 1997, IOM Viet Nam has expanded its activities to focus on the migration health concerns of mobile populations, including trafficked persons, internal migrants, and other vulnerable mobile groups.
The IOM's MHAC has been operating in Ho Chi Minh City since 1988. Additionally, the MHAC expanded to Hanoi in 2015.
Our Mandate
IOM Viet Nam's mandate is to ensure that people moving under the auspices of the IOM are fit to travel, that they are not a hazard to the people traveling with them, and that they receive appropriate medical attention during all phases of migration.
Our Services: Migration Health and Travel Health Assessments
Migration health is a core activity of IOM Viet Nam. This is conducted within the Organization's health guidelines and in accordance with the specific national legislation of the resettlement countries, as well as respective health authorities which include:
- Health assessments of prospective migrants
- Pre-departure treatment (such as Tuberculosis and certain infectious diseases)
- HIV counselling and health education
- Immunization
- Pre-embarkation medical checks and emergency movements-associated health assessments
- Medical escorts during air transportation of migrants in need of care
- DNA collection for facilitated migration
At the request of the Governments of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the UK, IOM is a designated panel service provider, conducting health assessments for migrants, resettlement cases, and students in line with each country's immigration health protocols.
