Strengthening Government Capacity to Support Vulnerable Migrants in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region and Malaysia
Duration: 12 months (2015 – 2016)
Location: Nghe An Province of Vietnam
Implementing partner: Women’s Union of Nghe An province
Donor/Funding source: Population, Refugees, and Migration Bureau of the U.S. Department of State (PRM)
Brief description of project/Objectives: The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improving the well-being and addressing the protection needs of vulnerable migrants in the GMS and Malaysia. The project aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To promote safe and legal migration, and reduce exploitation towards migrants in Vietnam
- To improve administrative legal mechanisms to promote the protection of the rights of vulnerable migrants
- To increase the access to support services for vulnerable migrants and victims of human trafficking
This project is a component of a sub-regional project funded by the PRM.
In this project, in recognition of the lack of awareness of safe migration practices and returnee services in high labour-sending provinces, IOM Vietnam proposes to extend its focus from VOT to vulnerable migrants more generally, at the pre-departure and reintegration stage, through the establishment of community based, government-supported mechanism, a Migrant Resource Centre in Nghe An, a major labour migrant sending province.
This will be a significant step forward in the promotion of regular and safe migration and in the reduction of exploitation of migrants in Vietnam.
